I’m from Glasgow, Scotland, where I received most of my education in public libraries and boxing rings.
I’ve lived in the U.S. since 1995. After 12 years in the cactus jungle of Phoenix, AZ, and five years in the hell realm of Chattanooga, TN, I now live in Portland, OR.
I’ve written more than a dozen books, roughly half of which are set in Scotland. The other half are set in Arizona. They include a horror novel, a graphic novel, some noir crime novels and some that don’t fit any genre. I also wrote the script for a short film.
My journalism has appeared in magazines and newspapers including Harper’s, Flaunt, Scotland on Sunday, The Arizona Republic, Las Vegas Life and Nerve. My account of witnessing executions won a FOLIO Silver Medal in the Best Single Article category.
I’m also a Zen teacher, and was named one of the Great Buddhist Bloggers by Tricycle. All of the writing that made them say that is in my book Kill Your Self.
If you’re interested in having me write for your publication or speak at your event, email me. But please read this first.
