• I’m from Glasgow, Scotland, where I received most of my education in public libraries and boxing rings.
  • I’ve lived in the U.S. since 1995. After 12 years in the cactus jungle of Phoenix, AZ, and five years in the hell realm of Chattanooga, TN, I now live in Portland, OR.
  • I’ve written more than a dozen books, roughly half of which are set in Scotland. The other half are set in Arizona. They include a horror novel, a graphic novel, some noir crime novels and some that don’t fit any genre. I also wrote the script for a short film.
  • The Book of Man was chosen as a best book of the year by the American Library Association. When It All Comes Down to Dust was a Mystery People best book of the year, and The Wrong Thing was a Spinetingler best book of the year.
  • Three of my novels and a collection of my stories have been translated into French.
  • My journalism has appeared in magazines and newspapers including Harper’s, Flaunt, Scotland on Sunday, The Arizona Republic, Las Vegas Life and Nerve. My account of witnessing executions won a FOLIO Silver Medal in the Best Single Article category.
  • I’m also a Zen teacher, and was named one of the Great Buddhist Bloggers by Tricycle. All of the writing that made them say that is in my book Kill Your Self.
  • If you’re interested in having me write for your publication or speak at your event, email me. But please read this first.
